prego saucy: March 2 - 6 2007

March 2 2007

I have been off work for a month, and have amounted to basically nothing. Lots of naps, lots of movie watching and ice cream making and eating, a couple of drawings produced, no frantic nesting behaviour as of yet.

The other day, I won a baby gift basket from my local Wild Oats store, which eliminated the need to go out and buy some baby stuff. Among the items included were a pair of kiddo Crocs (so in 3 years, the Croc-wearing kiddo can be equally as lame as her Ugg-wearing momma) and a starter kit of gDiapers, which are flushable eco diapers that require you to use a swizzle stick prior to flushing. Mmmmm-mm. Good thing I plan to breastfeed.

I'll use the flushables as the kiddo's out and about diaper since I much prefer the cloth diaper concept (160 gDiapers = $52; 280 cloth diapers delivered, picked up, laundered by diaper service = $65).

Regarding the ice cream making, I only recently got into the full swing of making my own ice cream, despite having purchased an incredible industrial ice cream maker in July. It was a little present to myself after I sold my house: the machine cost the same amount as my mortgage payment. During my first trimester, I was tired all the time and preferred to just grab a box of Breyers or Ben & Jerry's from the grocery. However, I've been making frozen custard lately and it's much more delicious than what you can get from the grocery store.

Big hits so far:

Dulce de leche, served at a neighbourhood dinner party to appreciative moans

(I made my own caramel by boiling a can of condensed milk for three hours. Even though on the can it says "do not boil an unopened can," the New York Times magazine said I could, so I did, apprehensively, and it was tasty, sin explosivo.)

Espresso bean, gobbled up by me and JB

Maple black walnut (insert Homer Simpson "glar glar glar" sound here)

It's the Musso Lussino, available on amazon with free shipping (it weighs 20 pounds or so). If you're going to buy a major appliance this year, this is it.

For future reference, some movies to avoid in the last weeks of pregnancy:

13 Monkeys
The Departed
The Machinist
Babel

My dreams are quite vivid these days and often they get stuck on one theme -- for example, we had an amazing hike out in the Pinalenos near Safford, AZ on Saturday and my dreams focused on outdoorsy, mountainous images. Generally my dreams are picturesque or amusing. However, after watching The Departed, my dream cycle was stuck in the elevator at 344 Washington where someone gets their brains blown out. Each time I woke up to powder my nose, I told myself "dream about something else" but when I fell back asleep, I found myself in the elevator yet again, brains sprayed everywhere, over and over and over again.

Bleah.

March 6 2007

I have just recovered from a bout of viral GI nastiness and have wonderful things to report about Pedialyte and specifically, Pedialyte Freezer Pops. My particular reaction to the tummy bug was that I could not take full hearty quaffs of liquid, I had to sip slowly or bad things would happen. Inconvenient when you're feeling dehydrated. Freezer Pops to the rescue -- icy, cold, tasty, and they slowly melt down the back of your throat quenching thirst and replacing electrolytes. I'm going to make sure I have a bunch for labour...

(I chose Pedialyte over Brawndo since Brawndo tastes like sweat, I figured Pedialyte would be baby-friendly, and the gulches between here and Nogales are littered with Pedialyte bottles, not Brawndo...)

State of the knocked-up-ed-ness:

feet no longer swollen since my butt isn't stuck at a desk all day
restless leg syndrome cured by a super duper massage at Archeiai Healing Arts
only complaint is that I feel like an upside tortoise when I try to roll over or get out of bed
(also, I could really go for a glass of Pappy Van Winkle's and some fresh salmon sashimi)

Belly as of February 24:
