the avra valley dispatch: 19 May 2004 -- Five Reasons I Love Tucson (not counting the weather)

Number 3. Number 3 benefits my living room.

I was chatting with the boss at work today about his recent business trip to San Francisco and he mentioned that he found it hard to believe I can even function in Tucson after living there.

Funny thing is, in the last two or three weeks, I've been experiencing Major Tucson Bliss. I've gotten down a groove (a "groove" being much more satisfying than a "routine," of course) of work and going to classes in the evening and working on the house and meeting people. California seems like a lifetime ago.

I do miss stopping at the general store in San Gregorio en route to Bean Hollow and Pebble Beach just north of Santa Cruz and I miss... .

...there must be something else and it will come to me shortly, but in the meantime, here are the things I love about Tucson excluding the gorgeousness of it all, the fabulous weather, the naturifficness, and the sunsets, which are otherworldly and unending.

1. Austin's Old Fashioned Ice Cream. 2920 E. Broadway. Hot fudge sundae with coconut, cinnamon, and ginger ice cream.

2. South Tucson taco joints. I have found a few on my own, like Pico de Gallo on 6th Avenue. But one of the great things about my job is I work with all boys and boys love taco joints. I've been introduced to Speedy's on Country Club near Bilby, BK and Tacos Apson on South 12th Avenue, and I've heard tell of a place called Pepe's, which is a Llanteria Taqueria Combinacion. Sounds like a class joint.

3. I can keep the top down on my car pretty much all the time. This comes in handy when 3a. you spot a fabulous banana yellow chair for next to nothing in a junque boutique out on Nogales Highway in South Tucson. Who needs an SUV when you have a convertible and bungee cords?

4. Tucson Yoga. No cell phones ring during class and everyone stays for savasana and if you take Debbie's class, she'll sing you a little song in sanskrit while the lights are out and I can't believe that the way I feel is legal.

5. The trains come right through town. I love driving home from my yoga class on Wednesday nights since sometimes I get stopped at the railway crossing on 6th Street and in my mellow mood, I cut my engine and count all the cars that go by: 102, 103, 104. The best part is catching up to the train once I get out to the I-10 frontage. The tracks run parallel to the road and I can drive alongside the engine, and we keep pace as it gains momentum and the speed limit increases the further I get outside of town. It's dark, and no one else is driving the frontage, and I can see the conductor silhouetted in the front of the engine and I wave and imagine he's toooooot-tooooooting just for me.

Of course he's toooooot-tooooooting just for me.
