Nogales, December 20

Nogales, Sonora is about a 90-minute drive from where I live. On the 20th of December, southbound Interstate 19 was crowded with vans, trucks, and SUVs hauling trailers and carrying flapping, blue-tarped roof loads. Lots of California plates. Christmas goodies por la familia. I enjoy wandering the back alleys and the business districts of Nogales; checking out the hardware stores, the church, the department store with Robert Palmer dancing girls in the doorway. And as a fixer-upper homeowner and tyro construction assistant, I take a perverse pleasure in the utter disregard for building codes.
